Don't waste your time and money!
Ever since Steak-O-Rama opened on 2nd Street in Long Beach, my husband Dave and I have wanted to go eat there. We were finally able to clear our busy schedules and ate there this last Sunday afternoon (4/01/07). We had a coupon for $25 off a $50 food purchase (dinner menu only), so we ordered off of the dinner menu.
We had high expectations; maybe that was part of the problem. The Service and the food were terrible, and the food is not exactly cheap! Not to mention the cleanliness of the establishment - if it's dirty in the public area where people eat, then it makes you wonder what state the kitchen is in!
We were told to seat ourselves, and sat at a table for two. One of the napkins on the table had already been used by someone and had gum stuck in the middle of it. The table had not been cleaned well and still sported grease from the previous customers. It took forever to get somebody to take our order and then it took even longer to get extra napkins. It also took an eternity to get the drinks we ordered. Each time we had the feeling that whatever we asked for was somehow forgotten about.
Dave ordered a beer, and low and behold, he got his beer, but no glass, which he then had to request. His beer sat there getting warm for about 10 minutes, while we waited for that glass, when it finally arrived, it was a small water tumbler, not a beer glass. What kind of fine dining establishment (which is what they call themselves) has no beer glasses and expects their patrons to drink straight from the bottle?
Dave had the rib eye (around $18), and I had the surf & turf (around $22) along with side dishes and appetizers - neither of us were happy with our meals! The waitress had not asked me how I wanted my steak cooked and I forgot all about it until my meal arrived. Dave asked her how it was cooked, since it wasn't discussed. She said "oh, we usually cook them medium". So in other words, the place is soooo classy, that you don't even have a choice on how your steak is prepared. Perhaps the cook only knows how to make it one way?
Upon inspection, my steak was cooked well-done a little more than half way through from one side (like it was put on the grill and then forgotten) and the other side of it had barely touched the grill, so it was about "medium" on that side. However, I decided not make a fuss and to just eat the eatable parts (I like my steak medium-rare). The steak had that taste to it as if the grill had not been cleaned in some time, and it had unidentifiable bits and pieces stuck to the outside. After 3 bites from my filet mignon, I found a piece of grizzle in my mouth that should not have come from a filet mignon.
The shrimp that came with my meal had a strange taste and hadn't been de-veined well; still had poop in some of them. We both ordered baked potatoes and where I like sour cream in mine, I don't use butter at all - Dave only uses butter and never sour cream. Usually the butter and sour cream would come on the side so people can do what they want with their potato, but in this restaurant, the potato comes loaded with butter and sour cream. We both had to wait for two more plain potatoes with the stuff on the side (10 minutes). The least the waitress could have done is tell us how they serve it in case we had a problem with it - but the waitress seemed to be very inexperienced.
I can't imagine paying full price for a meal like this - we will definitely never go there again and I thought people ought to know BEFORE they waste their money in this restaurant. On the upside, the waitress was very friendly, just not efficient "at all". The moral of this story is that whenever there is a coupon involved, you can bet that there is a good reason for it. In all of our experiences, it has always meant the restaurant needs business and now we know why!
